about

I've been searching for this tape for a couple of years and just found it in an unexpected place. Recorded on the back of a C90 that has Neil Young's 'Tonights the Night' on the flip this is the first recording that I remember being really pleased with- the 2nd track most especially.
I was 19 and it was a few months into what would turn into a 2 year cycling trip around NZ, hunting, fishing and camping, and working on orchards for money to keep me going- it hadn't even occurred to me that I could go on the dole..
In between the apricot and apple seasons I went down and stayed a couple of weeks at my grandparents house on Bourke Street in Invercargill. We went for many day trips around the wilds of the Southland Coast and it was frequently stormy. One day I got struck by lightning while whitebaiting with my grandfather- he thought I was dead but I jumped back up again. It was very strange. Another day I remember tattooing my chest with dandelion juice and a gorse thorn. The very faint tattoo/scar was visible for a few months but as I check now 24 years later there is only the slightest trace.
On other days I would walk to town and the library through Queens Park and read Keri Hulme poems and books on Gaia Theory and Native American spirituality. I had a tape walkman and tapes by Syd Barrett, The Birthday Party and - Neil Young. I knew hardly a thing about NZ music then.
I had been writing poetry since I was 15 or 16 and started turning these into songs from 17. I was pretty obsessed with recording even then- right from the start- but listening back to the VERY early tapes theres not a lot I would want people to hear..
I recorded these tracks one afternoon using my tape walkman and my Grandparents cassette deck to play back on, recording on one then playing back on the other and playing along- I still kind of like that method and the super grainy murky effect that results. I can't make out the lyrics at all myself and certainly don't remember them but from the sound of them I'm guessing I was likely reading off a piece of paper. I seem to recall that the second one was about riding my bike with a storm at my tail.
