We were walking along the road and I came across an almost perfectly round ball like stone. I took a run up and bowled this along the cracked tarmac of the highway where in bounded and hopped along at great speed. To our shock and amazement a (endangered) NZ falcon swept down out of the bush lining the road and tried to catch the stone- no doubt thinking it a hopping mouse. We laughed with delight and collected the stone and rolled it back up the road the other way and were even more surprised when the bird was fooled again sweeping along trying to grab the stone in its small talons. A car came over the rise- it almost hit the falcon.
The whole incident reminded me of a time when I was camping there 15 years earlier and had accidentally killed a seagull when I threw a (small..) piece of wood at it to scare it away from the plate full of dinner I had left unattended for a moment.
