I started recording this track shortly after the very first of the Christchurch earthquakes (September 4th 2010). I feel vaguely uncomfortable about it now- and all earthquake themed "sound art" for that matter. At the time simply experiencing an earthquake seemed a novel event- very dramatic and awesome- and I was keen to try and reproduce the bassy shuddering on tape. Given what was to follow a few months later, a quake that killed nearly 200 people, and the disconcerting intermittent tumult we all experienced down there over the ensuing months I find such reminders a bit too close to home.
But I have chosen to release this track here anyway- unfinished.. I was pleased with how it was going and it is perhaps appropriate that it be incomplete given the fact that the tectonic sequence unleashed last September is still active and also because I personally feel that the more such activity I myself experience the less I am actually able to understand it.
