about

A collection of audio experiments from over the last 5 or 6 years.

1) Recorded on a windy day in the showground fields over the back fence from my house. Zoom recorder set up in an old oil drum with the wind whistling through it as I walked about with a small battery powered synth.

2) An older track- circa 2018 or 2019 recorded at my old flat in Wellington one wet afternoon. The concept here was for a chamber music style piece that slowly shifts in tone and mood through different 'colours'.

3) Sampling keyboard recorded onto a recording tape walkman and then taken out into the back yard and played back under a tree and rerecorded twice, once with me singing along and the other playing a bamboo flute. Resulting recordings mixed together. Initially intended for a Claypipe backing track but decided it kind of worked just as its own thing better.

4) Something of an inadvertent homage to Glen Branca.. I came up with the idea of recording a piece using guitars tuned so that all the strings are the same note, but with the different guitars tuned to different notes that would all together create a giant chord. The appealing part was being able to strum with an open neck- that big ringing sound of non-fingered strings. I spent a while working out the best notes to use so as to avoid over tuning the strings and used a capo on some of the tracks to get higher tones. Anyway, I was pretty pleased with this idea and how it was sounding and mentioned it to a friend who said- 'oh, like Glen Brancas stuff?!' That took the wind out of my sails a little but also opened out what had been a strictly conceptual kinda piece to adding keyboard etc and just turning it into some sort of dark ecstatic roar.
